Sulfa Allergy Symptoms

An estimated three percent of the population is allergic to sulfonamides, a class of antibiotic drugs typically prescribed for bacterial infections. If you are presently taking a sulfonamide antibiotic, such as Bactrim, Pediazole or Septra, and you experience one or more of these symptoms, your doctor may diagnose you with a sulfa allergy.

Common reactions

The most common allergic reactions produced by a sulfa allergy are skin rashes and fevers. Some of these skin rashes are minimal, resembling a case of hives or increased photosensitivity, or may present as a far more severe rash. Swelling may also occur, especially in the throat.

Respiratory reactions

Some asthma sufferers with sulfa allergies find that they are more prone to wheezing. An allergic reaction may also trigger an asthma attack. If your asthma worsens while you are on an antibiotic, talk to your doctor about the possibility that the medication has caused adverse reactions.

Liver and kidney problems

Sulfa allergies can also affect the functions of your liver and kidneys, sometimes developing into hepatitis or kidney failure. If your liver or kidneys are already compromised by some other condition and you suspect you may have a sulfa allergy, discuss this with your doctor when you are prescribed an antibiotic.

Related reactions to sulfur-based preservatives

Sulfur-based preservatives also appear in many other sorts of products, and these may sometimes also cause similar reactions if you have a sulfa allergy. Such preservatives appear in some processed foods; check the list of ingredients for items with "sulfur" or "sulfite" in the name. Many beers and wines also tend to have sulfites.

If you or a loved one experiences one or more of these symptoms while taking an antibiotic, you may have a sulfa allergy. Talk to your doctor, and see if you can get your prescription switched to another antibiotic that does not cause you to have such a reaction. Even if the reaction seems relatively mild, discuss it with your doctor before the reaction has a chance to become even more severe and life-threatening.
