Hydrochlorothiazide 25mg

Hydrochlorothiazide 25mg is a common prescription drug. It is often sold under the names Ezide, Hydro-Par and Microzide, and is used to treat hypertension, heart failure and calcium-balance conditions such as osteoporosis. Though there are several doses of this drug available, the 25mg dose is one of the most common for treating all of these disorders.

Effects on the body

Hydrochlorothiazide's main effect is to cause the kidneys to excrete more water. This lowers the volume of fluid in the body and, thus, reduces blood pressure. This effect helps address hypertension and other heart disorders. The other main effect of hydrochlorothiazide is a lowering of the concentration of calcium in the urine. This helps patients with osteoporosis keep their blood levels of calcium in the acceptable range.

Taking hydrochlorothiazide 25mg

Patients can take this drug with or without food. It is commonly given once daily, though if it is used to treat edema, it is sometimes given twice daily.

Side effects and interactions

There are some negative side effects associated with this diuretic. Patients sometimes experience electrolyte imbalances, headaches and vomiting. If this drug is used in combination with corticosteroids, low potassium may result. Thus, doctors often prescribe potassium supplements in these circumstances. Nursing women should not use this drug, since it is excreted in milk and can reduce the volume of breast milk.

Hydrochlorothiazide 25mg is a prescription drug used to treat a variety of conditions. Like any drug, it has its side effects, but it is highly effective when used correctly and carefully.
