Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic drug that inhibits the kidneys’ ability to retain water, thereby reducing the volume of blood, decreasing the return of blood to the heart and lowering peripheral vascular resistance. While it is commonly used for the treatment of hypertension, heart failure, diabetes insipidus, edema and the prevention of kidney stones, there are several side effects that can result from its misuse.

Some of the side effects of hydrochlorothiazide include impotence, blurred vision, nausea, diarrhea, flatulence, jaundice, rapid heartbeat, fatigue, coughing, muscle pain or cramping, nervousness and skin problems, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or dermatitis. In addition, it can cause pancreatic problems and even renal inflammation, which can develop into something worse than what the drug was originally designed to treat. However, the occurrence and intensity of these side effects can vary in individuals depending on their ages.
